This is the "Wrong Turn 4" (2011) official trailer which we took inspiration from for our trailer that we are creating. The first scene of this trailer sets the scene of the hospital where the critically ill are kept. It is set at night so it is dark and this sets an atmosphere and makes the first shot more scary. The lights in the hospital also create a very eerie atmosphere.
The next scene at 0:18 shows one of the patients that are in the hospital and you can tell that they it is dangerous as it has a mask on showing that it will try and kill if it is not wearing this. This not only shows the scary nature of the film but it also tells the audience that it is a Horror trailer. After this shot we see another patient who is locked up showing again that they are dangerous and they need to be sectioned to stop bad things from happening. We took inspiration from these characters to be the killers in our trailer as they are more realistic than zombies and this makes the trailer more scary. There is a constant voice over throughout the trailer which tells the audience why the patients are in the hospital, although the audiences don't necessarily listen to this voice over it adds an atmosphere to the trailer. At 0:36 we see more patients locked up, these however look more scary and a lot more intimidating to the audiences. The voice over then says "these are the most dangerous patients in the hospital" again emphasising the fact that these are more harmful than the rest. The scenes after this show that tension in the hospital is rising as the patients have broke out and this creates tension and a more scary atmosphere. At 1:10 we see the group of protagonists in the hospital who are obviously not meant to be there, the audience hear a scream from a girl and this makes the scene and ultimately the trailer more scary. The hospital is dark and sinister and the only light shown is from the torch this makes it more tense and more scary. There is a typical young male in the scene at 1:20 where he tries to see what is happening however this doesn't end well as he will die for his ignorance and this is a typical convention of horror. There is then a sequence of shots which show the fear of the young females. After this the male youth jumps out at the females and scares them, this is a typical convention of horror and the audience will now not feel sympathy for the male if anything bad happens to him in the film. At 1:36 there is a sequence of long shots showing the killer in the foreground and the group of victims in the background which sets the scene for the horror. After this at 1:44 we see in the trailer that the horror film is gong to be very gory and have a lot of blood in, this will attract a more younger male audience to the film. After this there are a sequence of shots which show the gore of this film with a close up of the young males face covered in blood. The music adds a lot of tension to the trailer and we are going to take inspiration from this as it adds more tension to the trailer and gives it better atmosphere. At 2:04 we see the killer actually eating the victim which shows the sub genre is cannibalism and his attracts the audience more as they want to see what more the cannibals do in the actual film. At 2:05 there is a three second black screen which adds tension to the trailer and then the title of the film comes onto the screen with good background music. Again giving us inspiration for our trailer that we will be making. We believe that this trailer will give us a lot of ideas as it is tense and also keeps the audience engaged, making them want to watch the actual film when it is released. LB |
This is the “World War Z” (2013) official trailer. This will be
used as inspiration when we are making our horror movie trailer as we are
looking to create a cannibal inspired theme. “World War Z” is a brand new
horror movie so studying it will help us know what appeals to people. It also
got a high score on IMDB of 7.4, showing that the movie was popular.
In the opening scene there is an establishing shot of rush hour traffic within a major city. This gives an impression of daily life in a city, where people our going about their everyday routine unaware of what is going to happen. At 0:16 a policeman drives past the car smashing the wing mirror. This is unusual as a policeman would normally stop but in this instance he continues indicating that something serious is going on. At this point a helicopter is hovering overhead adding to the confusion. At 0:.30 our protagonist steps out of the car to find out what is going on. There is then an explosion from one of the buildings close by. There is an atmosphere of panic, mayhem and confusion as people leap out of their vehicles and flee the scene. As this is going on a police officer is crushed by a lorry traveling at high speed through the traffic. A non-diegetic sounds track kicks with quite a fast tempo at first flashing through titles like a heartbeat. The shots are in sync with the sound track as there are flashes of the unseen dead invading the city of New York. The music starts to get louder as there is a huge panic as everyone is trying to get away, including a police officer who is seen as a powerful figure but he himself is also running fearing his life. At 0.55 our protagonist gathers his family as they try to depart the area as fast as they can. The sound track increases the tempo as they are trying to escape. You can also hear the public screaming in the background as they are being attacked. He then makes a phone call asking “What is this?” as his voice is being played there are lots of shots of soldiers, people running and explosions. He then asks “is this thing worldwide” as he says this the tempo again increases flashing shots of large areas that have been invaded by the dead. He finally asks, “Is anyone doing better than we are?” we then see that the population loss fly up as we hear a voice answer “I got nothing”. This shows us that people don’t know what is going on but we know that this thing is a worldwide disaster. At 1.15 and throughout the trailer we can see that the shots of zombies are kept mostly to long shots. But it has clearly been established that these zombies are unlike the stereotypical zombie as they can run and scramble over one another like a swarm of insects. We feel that this is a great idea as it makes the zombies come across even scarier as in other movies people rely on their speed to escape but in this the zombies are extremely quick. At 1.20 we see that out protagonist and his family have fled the outbreak to a nearby high-rise apartment building where they plan to be saved by a military helicopter. As they prepare themselves it’s very silent and eerie as the mother says “how do we know they’re coming?” our protagonist replies “They’re coming”. This gives the impression that nowhere is safe. As they burst out to escape the non-diegetic sound tracks starts up with a loud noise as they try to run to the helicopter for safety. Our protagonist tries to hold the door closes as his family go first and the oncoming zombies pile up against the door. As he makes a dash for the helicopter a few zombies sprint after him but he manages to get away as the zombies fall to their doom. From 1.40 we see long shots of the corrupted city of New York and other fast paced shots of other infested areas of the zombie invasion as people try to run and fight against the dead as they swarm through cities and towns destroying everything and everyone in their path. This includes the final shot at 2.05 where the zombies climb all over each other to get over the wall protecting people hundreds of people who thought they were safe. The title then appears on the screen “World War Z” we can tell by the title and the trailer that this is a world war against the dead. We believe that this trailer has inspired us with lots of new, creative and original ideas we can use for our own project. RG |
World War Z Trailer |
New Idea
Flatliners |
We are going to use the guilt idea in this trailer as an inspiration to our new idea. It is the official trailer of "Flatliners" (1990) which is all about a group of people who are very guilty of what happened to their friends.
The distribution company's animation is shown to begin with as they are always shown at the start of trailers. It lets everybody know who has backed and help sell the song. The opening quote of 'Today's a good day to die' sets the tone of death and horror. Its also quite ironic as death is mostly seen as negative however it is said quite positively in this trailer. It then goes straight into a close up of defibrillators at 0:06 which once again represents death and illness. It then goes into a Black and White hue to add to the suspense of the scene. There a quite a lot of quick shots to demonstrate the 'rushy' nature in which the characters are in. After this scene at 0:14 it has a close up of an eye with hands in the foreground moving around the screen. This could represent the creepy soul like guilt that they feel. It shows how they will be transferring from life to death. A soundtrack is then brought in at this point and it is quite a freaky tune. It then shows what looks like a flashback of the scene where they try to save somebodies life. This is used to show that they are feeling guilty of something and that is the only thing that is on their mind. Then, somebody shouts 'We lost him' at 0:26 as it then fades to a black screen. This is telling the audience that the character is dead and the black screen is used to show how the people are upset and in disbelief. The soundtrack also stops as the characters are not panicking anymore as they've given up hope and are reflecting on their thoughts. This is technique is often used in horror films after an intense scene as it gives the characters and the audience a rest after a long period of concentration. When the next scene is unveiled, it is in a much calmer situation and everybody is talking in a normal tone. However. you then realise that the people are actually getting interviewed or questioned about the incident. It then goes to a close-up shot of a woman asleep in bed as you can see her eyes are closed at 0:34. The next shot is then that woman in a 'Dreamy' like room, this is demonstrated as it is in a pink filter and it is kind of misty and unclear. She is clearly currently in her dreams/thoughts and this is then proven by the overlapping narrator saying 'We've experienced death, and some how we've brought our sins back physically'. This then links to the guilt shown in the flashback, earlier shown on the trailer. The next few shots are quickly displayed and a new soundtrack is brought in with an upbeat pace. This is once again used to show how the characters are once again panicking. They don't want to believe the situation that they have found themselves in. In these shots, the characters are shouting once again and are shouting at each other. At 0:50, a character shouts 'They're not real' indicating to the audience that, whatever 'they' are, they're very mysterious and could be all in their heads. The action is then chopped up by the showing of the actors names. The text is on a heart rate monitor's background which is extremely effective and relevant as the title of the film is 'Flatliners' linked to the stopping of the heart. The title is then shown on the same background as the soundtrack in the background stops. A narrator in the background then says the catch line of the film 'Some lines shouldn't be crossed'. This is said as people will be drawn in to find out what 'the line' is, it also gives a subtle hint again that the people have done something wrong and are very guilty. This trailer and film is similar to our film idea and this is why I decided to analyze this trailer. We will most likely pay homage to some of the ideas in this film and use ideas from the trailer itself. JT |
