Flight Plan
I have chosen to analyse the film 'Flight Plan' a 2005 film. Although it is not from the horror genre, it is quite relevant to our film idea as it has a protagonist who is trying to work out whether they have made something up in their head or whether its the truth.
The first bit of sound that you hear at 0:04 is a soundtrack of a soft piano tune. It sets the tone for most of the trailer as it lasts for 40 seconds. The beginning is relatively slowly paced and the music is parallel to this. Dialogue is also overlapping this soundtrack, however the viewer does not always see the person actually speaking. This technique is often used in trailers as there is limited time to get all of the shots in and the speech. The plane that takes off at 0:33 has a very loud sound. This is to demonstrate its importance in the film, its a defining moment and this use of sound is a good why to show it. The sound is realistic and sounds as expected. Once again it overlaps the soundtrack which carries on playing after the planes noise has finished. When the mother wakes up and sees that her daughter is not there, the soundtrack stops and there is a moment of silence as the scene fades to black. Then a loud, deep noise drops in as the scene once again starts up, this indicates an increase in tempo in the trailer. Lots of dialogue is then used and it overlaps each other to show a busy period when the mother is panicking. A very clever technique is then used, if you listen through headphones, each new sentence seems to be coming from a different direction. This method is used to show that the mother is all about the plane and asking all around. To show the panicking again, a heart beating noise is added and it starts to get louder and faster. This indicates the more panic the mother is having and how it is becoming quite a stressful situation. The dialogue becomes louder as the mother starts shouting and the soundtrack has become a little more intense. The scene starts to fade to black every now and then and the soundtrack is synchronised as it drops every time that the black shot is shown. The soundtrack is then broken up suddenly as the pilot shouts 'She's dead' at 1:32. A loud, deep noise is once again used. Then the soundtrack becomes more slow and sad as it sinks into the mother that her child may actually not be on board the flight. At 1:58, a new soundtrack is introduced and it is very fast paced and therefore shows how the action is now starting as the mother is going to be searching for her daughter against force. Gun fire and shouting is mixed in for the next 20 seconds of this soundtrack. The soundtrack swiftly ends at 2:20 as the penultimate title is shown of the film, giving the indication that the trailer is over. JT |
